Underwater Welding

Wet Welding & Subsea Fabrication Services

At Diveworks International Ltd, we specialise in delivering complex underwater welding and fabrication projects in both inshore and offshore environments. Our team of coded commercial welders and compliant dive spreads are equipped to execute high-risk subsea welding operations with precision, safety, and efficiency.

Case Study: Portsmouth Port Wet Welding Programme

As part of a major infrastructure upgrade at Portsmouth Port, DWI was contracted to support the installation of a green energy heat exchange system. The project required the fabrication and underwater welding of a bespoke frame to support pipework and filtration units submerged along the quay wall.

Scope of Work:

  • Initial Inspection: UT readings and obstruction checks on the sheet pile wall.
  • Fabrication: Custom frame built to client specifications, hot-dip galvanised and pre-assembled on site.
  • Burning & Cutting: Removal of redundant brackets and plates using underwater exothermic cutting rods.
  • Surface Preparation: Needle gunning and flap grinding to expose clean metal for welding.
  • Wet Welding: Full structural welds performed underwater by qualified divers using direct current techniques.

This project was executed within a live commercial port, requiring meticulous planning, risk mitigation, and coordination with port authorities. The successful completion of this operation demonstrates our ability to deliver high-risk subsea welding in challenging environments.
